Lego Trilogy: Watchmen

Hello. I made you a thing.

Slightly Inappropriate Lego, at WorldofBlackout.co.uk

The idea's fairly self-explanatory: Lego*1 designs of slightly inappropriate subject matter. Not wholly inappropriate, that'd just be wrong. Just the kind of thing they make these toys of, but not these toys.
The kind of thing where you wouldn't really want your five-year-old watching the source material...

#1 Watchmen

Slightly Inappropriate Lego #1 : Dr. Manhattan

Slightly Inappropriate Lego #2 : Nite Owl II

Slightly Inappropriate Lego #3 : Silk Spectre II

Slightly Inappropriate Lego #4 : The Comedian

Slightly Inappropriate Lego #5 : Rorschach

Slightly Inappropriate Lego #6 : Ozymandias

Slightly Inappropriate Lego #7 : Bubastis

Cute, aren't they?

Review: Hitchcock

World of Blackout 77-Word Film Review

Hitchcock Poster

Hitchcock
Cert: 12A / 98 mins / Dir. Sacha Gervasi

Very pleasantly surprised by this. Hopkins is, for the most part, on good form balancing the light and dark sides of Hitchcock. As an audience, you're not persuaded to love or hate him, just be intrigued and observe. A great exercise in filmmaking.
The supporting cast and period detail all underscore this beautifully.

A quick refresher in Psycho a couple of days beforehand will enhance this film, but isn't essential.

Is the trailer representative of the film?
Yes*1.

Did I laugh, cry, gasp and sigh when I was supposed to?
Yes.

Does it achieve what it sets out to do?
Yes.

Pay at the cinema, Rent on DVD or just wait for it to be on the telly?
Cinema.

Will I think less of you if we disagree about how good/bad this film is?
Yes.

Will I watch it again?
Yes.

Is there a Wilhelm Scream?
No.

And because you won't be happy until I've given it a score...

*1 I should also point out what an excellently cut trailer that is. Pulling dialogue and imagery from different parts of the film, it tells you lots yet spoils nothing. Awesome.

Review: Flight

World of Blackout 77-Word Film Review

Flight Poster

Flight
Cert: 12A / 138 mins / Dir. Robert Zemeckis

For better or worse, the film you'll see is not as slick, zippy or clear-cut as that trailer. The pacing's uneven, the secondary characters are picked up and put down like a spoiled child's toys, and Washington does his damnedest (successfully so) to keep his character from being too likeable. It left me slightly drained, but it is good, just about 25 minutes too long.

So. Anyone fancy a pint?

Review: Lincoln

World of Blackout 77-Word Film Review

Lincoln Poster

Lincoln
Cert: 12A / 150 mins / Dir. Steven Spielberg

That's the second film this year with an engaging start, a spectacular end, and a dialogue-heavy mid-section that had me thinking 'Okay, you know where this is going, I certainly do, so how about you stop fucking talking about it and show me?'

Don't get me wrong, all of the performances are outstanding, but the film loses much-needed power in dawdling.

'Be excellent to each other. And… party on dudes.'
