Four hundred and sixty seven, thanks for asking.

CAUTION: Yen's blog contains harsh language and even harsher notions of propriety. Reader discretion is advised.

I blame these guys...

White armour is cool...

Back in 1997, around about the time of the Star Wars Special Edition cinema releases, Reed and myself were out on a Saturday afternoon, and I bought the Power of the Force 2 Stormtrooper and Luke/Stormtrooper (left/middle). Because Stormtroopers are cool. Later that same week, I bought the vintage trooper (on the right) to go with the other two.
'But I'm not going to start collecting again', I told myself (and others), 'I'll only buy the ones that are really cool...'

Then, over fifteen years, this happened:

Four hundred and sixty seven.
^^ Click for a larger version, but I'll warn you now, it's big (3648*2688px, 2.2mb)

Four hundred and sixty seven in total. That's not quite all of them there, they wouldn't all fit on the table.
I keep telling myself I'll stop at five hundred. But I know I won't.

Star Wars Open Day, 2012

CAUTION: Yen's blog contains harsh language and even harsher notions of propriety. Reader discretion is advised.

"Do you know what the two best feelings in the world are? Opening a brand new Star Wars figure, and watching other people fail."

Woo! It's Open Day! Come on over!

All together now...

Following last year's documented 'sit and open then photograph action figures like the OCD geek you are' day, I found myself once again with a surfeit of unopened toys (not to mention more time than is good for me). These aren't the only figures I've bought in the last year, just the ones I didn't open right away for whatever reason. Also, they're all Star Wars figures, this time around. This year's Avengers line just didn't appeal, sadly. Anyhow, in no particular order...

Bespin Wing Guard (Sgt. Edian) (The Legacy Collection)
Bespin Wing Guard (Sgt. Edian)
Purcased from: Forbidden Planet, Newcastle

Amazing. You look everywhere for two years for a figure, including ordering one online at an inflated price then cancelling the order when the website dicks about over actually having it in stock... and then you see it in FP for less than standard-retail. Result. When can I tell you, I've got a thing about Bespin. I blame Jedi Outcast.

Bespin Wing Guard (Utris M'Toc) (The Legacy Collection)
Bespin Wing Guard (Utris M'Toc)
Purcased from: Time and Space, Broadstairs

It's basically a re-paint of Sgt. Edian, above, but done well enough that you don't notice at first. Like I said, I love Bespin.

Prince Xizor (Power of the Force 2)
Prince Xizor
Purcased from: Toy Sale, Torquay

The single-carded version of Shadows of the Empire's Xizor, on an Italian PotF2 card. There's a small toy shop near the harbour in Torquay that I checked on the off-chance when I was there last, and it paid off as they had a bunch of 1990's era figures, still at 1990's era prices. Another result. The addition of this chap means I now have all three released versions of the Faleen prince (don't ask me why I didn't get this back in the day, I have no idea).

Super Battle Droid (The Clone Wars)
Super Battle Droid
Purcased from: Wilkinson's, Didcot

Yeah, full-price I wouldn't, but he was in the sale. Nice and stylised, and unlike the SBDs from the movie lines, he actually stands up on his own without the peg-stand.

Aurra Sing (The Clone Wars)
Aurra Sing (Clone Wars)
Purcased from: Toys-UK, Didcot.

A over-hyped character from the Expanded Universe, who's somehow being under-used in the animated show. Either way, I do have a soft spot for Aurra Sing, if only because she's a strong female character who doesn't make a song and dance about being a female character. That's quite a rarity in the genre.

Aurra Sing (Wal-Mart Exlclusive)
Aurra Sing (Phantom Menace)
Purcased from: Asda, Broadstairs

The Wal-Mart/Asda versions of the 2012 Phantom Menace line featured a section with old-school 3D glasses, for the sole purpose of looking at the picture on the back of the card (loosely tied in with the 3D re-release). Oh well. That said, I only got the 'exclusive' version because I couldn't see her on a regular card.

Savage Opress (The Clone Wars)
Savage Opress
Purcased from: Sainsbury's, Didcot

The gap between Darth Maul's brother appearing on The Clone Wars animated show and actually appearing in regular shops in the UK was 18 months. Cynics have suggested that the TV show is a glorified toy advertisment. No-one appears to have told this to Hasbro. No matter, this figure is badass, and worth the wait.

Republic Commando Boss (The Clone Wars)
Republic Commando Boss
Purcased from: Sainsbury's, Didcot

After a brief cameo in season three of The Clone Wars, it looks like Delta Squad from the 2005 LucasArts game are getting another Hasbro outing, this time individually, rather than as a battle-pack. That said, the last run had Scorch released as a single figure, but the rest as pack-exclusives. So, who knows...

Darth Maul (Power of the Jedi)
Darth Maul (Sith Training)
Purcased from: Ebay

I missed this one back in 2001, so had to play the waiting-game to spot a bargain on Ebay. As luck would have it, he turned up at less than the price he retailed at originally. Shirtless-Maul for the win.

Hostage Crisis Battlepack (The Clone Wars)
Hostage Crisis Battlepack
Purcased from: Sainsbury's, Didcot

There's a big blank gap at the back of the packaging here where the US market got an exclusive promo DVD. Due to licensing restrictions, UK sets were sold without this (I've got it anyway, I'm like that).
Hostage Crisis is another one of those ones that isn't really special, per se, but when it's on clearance at under a tenner, it seems silly not to. The Weequay pirate looks good alongside Hondo Onaka from last year, and the Commando Droids will look good anywhere. Just got to figure out where/when I'm going to display Robinino. He'll look nice alongside Cad Bane, I suppose, but he can't stand on his own for shit...

+ + + + +

And because I love you so much, here are the scanned versions of the card-fronts. Again, click-for-big...

100: Open Day

CAUTION: Yen's blog contains harsh language and even harsher notions of propriety. Reader discretion is advised.

To paraphrase Armando Iannucci:

"Do you know what the two best feelings in the world are? Opening a brand new Star Wars figure, and watching other people fail."

Thanks to the internet, I can watch people fail whenever I want, but the figures aren't always available to hand. That said, if there's one thing that years of collecting has taught me, it's buy the bargain when you see it. Now, as I'm always in the mood for buying toys, I inevitably end up with figures I've bought but saved for opening (oh come on, you ladies have all got shoes you've never worn, and you blokes have Scart leads you've no intention of ever using). And I am 'an opener'. With very few exceptions, I'd rather have my figures loose in a stackable box than taking up 10x more room carded. Anyway, I can't set them up in cool dioramas if they're packaged, can I?
Anyway, it turns out I'd built up a few figures of the last couple of years that'd been taking up precious cupboard space.

So last week I had an open day.
Y'know. A day where you just open toys all day. Actually, you probably don't know. Understandable.

They're not all classics, but they were all cool enough for me to buy, and I'd like to share them with you now.

Where does he get those wonderful TOYS?

+ + + + +

NOTES ON OPENING: Please bear in mind, you can't just tear the bubbles off the cards unless you're five years old. Where's the joy in that? Like opening a bottle of whiskey, it has to be done properly to get the most out of it. You can use a craft-knife, but since my design education, I've been a scalpel-wielding maniac, so that's what I use. The plus side of this is that it leaves the design on the card intact. Ideal if you want to scan it and use it as a basis for customs (oh, is it just me that does that?).

Click on any of these pics for a bigger version.

This is how you open them, alright?

+ + + + +

So, without further ado (because that was quite an ado there), here are the figures I opened:

Darth Vader (Vintage Collection)
Darth Vader (Vintage Collection)
Purchased from: Woolworths, Didcot.

Yes, Woolworths. This figure is that old. He came free with the DVD release of the Original-Original Trilogy. I'm not a massive fan of the Vintage Collection as I'm an opener anyway, and they're just regular Star Wars figures after that. There's a lot of articulation on this figure, so he's fairly flimsy. Soft-goods cape, too, which I'm not a lover of. Still, he was free, and it's always good to have Vader mashing things up.

Stormtrooper
Stormtrooper
Purchased from: Woolworths, Didcot.

Bought when the figures were on 2-for-1, during the 30th Anniversary Collection in 2007. Classic Stormtrooper. The legs are great for standing in parade, but not so hot for action poses. Still a beautiful figure, though. You can never have too many Stormtroopers.

Ironmonger
Ironmonger
Purchased from: Alworths, Didcot.

Would. You. LOOK. At this BADBOY! The baddie from the first Iron Man movie, this 3¾" figure didn't come out until the second movie was released (the original figures were 5" scale). He's on par with the Star Wars EU Darktrooper in terms of awesomeness. His poseable clawed-feet mean he stands on most surfaces (not that he's got peg-holes in those feet anyway), and he's an all-round badass, towering above 99% of figures in this scale. A definite choice for mash-up dioramas.

Mola Ram
Mola Ram
Purchased from: Toys'r'Us, Reading.

The short-lived Indy line from 2008 was proof positive that even though the same people who like Star Wars generally like Indiana Jones, you can't market them in the same way. The sculpts on the figures were variable, and some of the articulation a little off, but the main problem is that I.J. just doesn't have the range of characters that S.W. has. So you get excellent figures like Mola Ram from Temple of Doom, then a load of mediocre army-building troops. I just didn't work, sadly. But I love my Mola Ram.

Terminator T-R.I.P
Terminator T-R.I.P
Purchased from: Play.com

Bearing in mind, the Terminator is meant to be a big bastard, this line was just under-scale for a 3¾" line (although the Harry Potter figures have been fluctuating around it for years). This one is the best of a bad line. A lovely sculpt, just a little too small. Point of interest: The manufacturers couldn't get the rights to reproduce Christian Bale's face, so his figure had a cloth over his head. I'm not kidding. Anyway, this is another figure that's ideal for mashup dioramas.

Jawa 2-Pack (Clone Wars)
Jawa 2-Pack (Clone Wars)
Purchased from: The Entertainer, Reading.

You can never have too many Jawas. The more sculpts the better. These mix well with the SW Saga figures, so top marks. Utini!

Jawa (with Treadwell Droid)
Jawa (with Treadwell Droid)
Purchased from: Alworths, Didcot.

See my notes on the Clone Wars Jawas. New Jawa sculpt, excellent Droid counterpart, what's not to love?

Darth Krayt & Sigel Dare (Comic Pack)
Darth Krayt & Sigel Dare (Comic Pack)
Purchased from: Forbidden Planet, London.

I'd been after getting the Darth Krayt figure loose on Ebay, but that was proving ridiculously expensive. If I'm going to pay £15, I may as well get the other figure and the comic, right? As with most of the Comic Packs, there's one figure you really want and one you're barely bothered about. Sigel Dare's a decent sculpt, but I'm not fussed about collecting the Imperial Knights, so she's strictly a background character. As both of these folks occur at around 120 years after Return of the Jedi, Sigel stands out as being out-of-place. Krayt, on the other hand, fits in anywhere. He's a badass. You'll need a figure-stand for him, though.

Clone Palpatine & Luke Skywalker (Comic Pack)
Clone Palpatine & Luke Skywalker (Comic Pack)
Purchased from: TK Maxx, Torquay.

Nice renditions of both characters from around 5 years after Return of the Jedi (Yes, yes, Palpatine's dead. That's why this is a clone. Don't ask.) A good Luke figure is always worth a punt, and this one doesn't disappoint. Palpatine seems a little short, but he was never exactly Stephen Merchant anyway, so never mind. Palps needs a stand, Luke manages without.

Clone Trooper (Utapau)
Clone Trooper (Utapau)
Purchased from: Sainsbury's, Didcot.

Bought as customisation-fodder, I never did get round to chopping him up. He goes great with Captain Cody and the other Utapau-style troopers. Still, he needn't think he's safe just because I've opened the packaging...

R2-D2 (Electronic)
R2-D2 (Electronic)
Purchased from: Wonderland, Ramsgate.

Surprisingly, I don't own that many R2-D2 figures. I've got plenty of other R3,R4,R5 units, but only two others of this character. This one makes different noises than my other electronic R2-D2, and has a different colour light. He's excellent. Fantastic sharp detailling on a great sculpt.

Wall-E
Wall-E
Purchased from: The 99p shop, Didcot.

I only got him because I thought he'd look cool with the droids from Star Wars. Which he does. There's shades of The Black Hole about him, too. It's a great figure in itself, but looking at the cardback, the rest of the range seems pretty uninspiring. It's difficult to market a line of toys when you've only got two standout characters.

Boba Fett (Holiday Special Appearance)
Boba Fett (Holiday Special Appearance)
Purchased from: Sainsbury's, Didcot.

Bought as a double during a 2-for-1 offer in 2007. The awesome Boba Fett as he appeared in the infamous 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. A sweet addition to the two or three other Bobas I have.

Hondo Ohnaka
Hondo Ohnaka
Purchased from: Sainsbury's, Didcot.

The Clone Wars' very own Ricardo Montalban here, he's a literal translation of the space-pirate theme. A good character on the show (if a little invincible. Well, for now.), he's an interesting looking figure. Great for Clone Wars dioramas, and passable for mixing with the SW Saga line as his stylisation's fairly minimal. Plus he comes with a Kowakian Monkey Lizard, and that's always good.

Chewbacca (McQuarrie Concept)
Chewbacca (McQuarrie Concept)
Purchased from: Woolworth's, probably.

An odd one. As part of the 30th Anniversary Collection, Hasbro released 12 concept figures. Three-dimensional sculpts of two-dimensional concept paintings by Ralph McQuarrie in the 1970's. The first two (Stormtrooper and Boba Fett) were like rocking-horse shit to find, but I managed to get them. The third one was Chewbacca. Expecting the same kind of rarity, I bought three of these, thinking I might sell two on Ebay. Alas, Concept Chewie turned out to be the pegwarmer of 2007, and a delay in the third-wave meant stores started piling up on these. You can't army-build with specific characters, so people buying multiples is going to be strictly limited. I ultimately got all 12 of the Concept series, and I've got them in the packaging still (because those ones do look good), so this little fella was up for opening. It's a great figure, but you kind of get sick of walking into toy shops and seeing 20 of them...

Quad Bike
Quad Bike!
Purchased from: Tesco. For 99p, no less.

Much like the BMX last year, I only got this because it's 3¾" scale, and looks great in mashup dioramas.

+ + + + +

So... let's get 'em all together!

Oi! Pick on someone your own size!

14. The snow-man cometh...

CAUTION: Yen's blog contains harsh lanugage and even harsher notions of propriety. Reader discretion is advised.

February 2009. It snowed this week, and the UK almost ground to a halt.

Some places had it worse than others, of course, but on the first day of snow, the public transport across London was closed by dear old Boris, for the first time ever since the system was set up. Bless 'im. As far as I know, the worst affected areas only had about a foot of snow (about 30cm). Hardly 'The Day After Tomorrow', but enough to slow the UK down. The problem is, you see, that we're not used to it. Not that much, anyhow. Even the Emercency Services were stretched to breaking point as a whole new generation of drivers had to tackle snow and ice for the first time.

Here in Oxford, it didn't really snow significantly until Wednesday. We got around 5 inches (12cm ish), max. Nice snow. Good for making snowmen and that. It occurred to me that the last time I saw snow like this, was probably in the late 80's, when I lived up in Durham. I've got great memories of the school being closed (either boiler-problems, or none of the teachers could/would make it in), and playing Gauntlet and Bruce Lee on the Amstrad464 at home, and occasionally venturing outside to do the snow-thing before realising it was just too damned cold to stay out for long.

Of course, the snow also brings back another part of my childhood. Y'know, the part that never really left me. In 1980, I had the Empire Strikes Back sticker album, being the SW obsessed child that I was/am. It's got to have been either Christmas '80 or '81 when I got the AT-AT, and from that moment on, I prayed for snow at every viable opportunity (viable for snowfall, not viable for prayer-time).

Why? So that I could take my toys out into the back yard and re-enact the Battle of Hoth properly, of course! In the sticker album, for all the stills from the movie that depict the Hoth battle, and for all the other concept-art by the fantastic Ralph McQuarrie, there was one picture that called to my imagination every time I saw it, and still does...

I'm not sure why it's this one over the others, there's just something about the speed I suppose. The snowspeeder is whizzing past, the walker is crumbling like a felled giant, and the troops are running in, all at different speeds to each other, which is amazing to be able to capture in one painting.

So, there I was outside with my toys whenever the snow came. AT-AT, Snowspeeder, Luke in his pilot gear, the other rebels in their Hoth gear, and my solitary snowtrooper left to fight them all off (which is the major drawback when you have one of each figure). And about twenty minutes later, I'd get too cold and bring the whole lot inside before the stickers on the vehicles got too wet and started to peel.

Of course, since then, Hoth isn't the only planet in the GFFA we've seen with a snow/ice theme. Thanks to various Expanded Universe sources (and one more of the movies, of course), we've had Mygeeto (Episode III), Alzoc III (Jedi Outcast demo), Orto Plutonia (Clone Wars), Fest (Dark Forces), Anteevy (Dark Forces) and Rhen Var (Battlefront) to name a few.

(Those aren't necessarily the first appearances of the planets, just the references that belong to those screenshots). So it's at times like these that I'm kicking myself for not buying Hasbro's Ultimate Wampa when I saw it in TRU for a tenner :(

But... we make do with what we've got. And this snowfall was enough to have me raiding the toybox again :D First up...

Luke is unable to bear the freezing conditions of my back garden...

Wasn't able to pick up the detail on Spirit Obi-Wan (Endor three-pack version, not mailaway), unfortunately. And the geek worth his salt will also notice that it's not Luke in the snow, it's the Rebel Soldier from the PotF2 '97 Laser-Cannon-Deluxe pack. The irony is, I've actually had two of the Hoth Luke figures, and customised them both (IE pulled the heads and hands off) to make Jaden Korr from Jedi Academy's Hoth levels.

(I made it during the summer months, so the photo was taken then )

General McQuarrie is captured during the battle of MyGardann

Really enjoyed setting this one up. TAC General McQuarrie (ironic for reasons stated above), Saga General Veers and Snowtrooper, PotF2 Snowtroopers and Probe Droid, and from way back, that's a vintage Kenner/Palitoy MLC-3 Mini-Rig. Inside the MLC3 is a Saga AT-AT Driver, but the camera didn't really pick him up, and it could be Snaggletooth in there for all you'd know.

Ki-Adi Mundi wades into snow... and trouble.

Yeah, Mygeeto was more of an ice planet than a snow planet, but the photo wouldn't have looked as nice if I'd taken it out on the road at the front of my house. RotS Ki-Adi Mundi, TAC Galactic Marines, Saga Clone Trooper and Airborne Trooper from Mace Windu's Attack Battalion, RotS AT-RT walker, and PotF2 Endor Bunker. And the snowman's in the background, not on top of the bunker

And yes, I'm aware that the bunker features in the timeline 25 years after the Clone Wars, but I figure the Republic/Empire has been using the same hardware all that time. The interior shots we're seeing on the Clone Wars animated show certainly seem to suggest so, with all Republic ship and base corridors looking like the interior of the Death Star.

+ + + + + + +

So there we have it, that's what I've been doing this week - playing in the snow, apart from other things.
Next time I'm heading down to the beach, I'll take a bantha and some sandpeople with me
